Prawn Hatcheries

Through our PRAWN HATCHERIES

Matsyafed has three brackish water prawn hatcheries with a production capacity of 30 million prawn seed and one fresh water prawn hatchery each with a production capacity of 20 million prawn seed.A technology to transport seed under minimal stress conditions has also been standardized.

Matsyafed Prawn Hatchery & Research Centre, Mopla Bay, Kannur

It was established in the year 1991 in order to meet the increasing demand of the seed of Penaeus monodon (Tiger Prawn). Production of Penaeus indicus, and Macrobrachium rosenbergi are also carried out here.Facilities of this hatchery is used for the production of ornamental fishes of high value and also giving training to the new enterprenences.This centre will also be housing the first mud crab hatchery in the state with the technical collaboration of the Rajeev Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture of MPEDA.

Matsyafed Prawn Hatchery & Research Centre, Thirumullavaram, Kollam

It was established in 1994-95. Penaeus indicus, Penaeus mondon and Macrobrachium rosenbergi are produced here.

Matsyafed Prawn Hatchery & Research Centre, Ponnani

It was established in 1995-96. Here the production includes Penaeus indicus, Penaeus mondon and Macrobrachium rosenbergi. Facilities are also utilized for training new beneficiaries in the ornamental fish culture.

Matsyafed Freshwater Prawn Hatchery, Kaipamangalam 

This hatchery, mainly meant for the production of Macrobrachium rosenbergi, is the first of its kind in the Public Sector that is set up exclusively for its production. Penaeus indicus and p.monodon are also produced here as and when required.
